I have a problem. I am completely addicted to Detroit’s new taqueria, Hot Taco. My issue? Now every time we are in Detroit the only place I want to eat is Hot Taco. You see, we moved here from Phoenix where good, fresh Mexican food flows out of every corner of the city. It had been 7 years since I had eaten a pre-packaged, store bought tortilla…then I moved to Michigan. I was thrilled to find this little gem right behind the Fox Theater and every time I go it gives me a delicious taste of home.
Insider Info.
Go anytime. Hot Taco is open every day from 11am-2am. It is the perfect spot to hit before or after a show, sporting event, or night at the DIA.
Order everything. The menu is simple and straight-forward, and everything I have tried is fantastic. Even better? Depending on the variety you can get 3 tacos for $6 or 3 tacos for $10.50. This is a place where you can feed your entire family for under $30, so skip the McDonald’s drive through and find some real food.
Think fast. You order at the counter and they call you up when it’s ready. It only takes a few minutes for them to concoct your perfect meal. You can grab and go or stick around at the small tables or counter top and chat and people watch. Hot Taco is a great option if you don’t have time to sit and be served before a downtown event. The staff is helpful and fantastic.
Choose corn. The corn tortillas are out of this world. Even if you think you only like flour tortillas, please order corn. They are soft but a little crispy and the perfect accompaniment to the inside filling. They have flour tortillas too, but let me emphasize one more time…order your tacos on corn tortillas. You will thank me.
Try my two favorites. If you go you absolutely must get the Pork Taco: Mexican style ancho BBQ pork with shredded cheese, red onions, cilantro & mango salsa ($2.50) and the Blackened Shrimp Taco: Spicy, seasoned shrimp with shredded cheese, red onions, cilantro, avocado and pico de gallo ($3.50). Favorites of friends are the Chorizo Taco and Fish Taco too. I must say, I have not been disappointed with anything and my kids loved it too. The tacos are small, so you will want to order enough (I need 3).
Feed your hunger. If you need more than a few tacos, they have larger burritos that come with the same, irresistible taco fillings but include beans, rice, avocado and salsa ($6-$7).
Go off the beaten path. They also offer breakfast burritos and a vegetarian option.
Try a Mexican Pop. It’s always fun to grab a bottle of Mexican Coke or Pop to complete the experience. It comes in varied and unusual flavors, but our favorite by far is lime ($2).
If you go.
Address. 2233 Park Ave. Detroit (behind the Fox Theatre)
Parking. I’m going to be honest, it’s a pain. If you are going to an event close by, park once and walk. If you are getting your items to go, have the driver wait for you in the car…much easier and cheaper, just remember to check out the menu first. If these are not good options, pray for an open spot right out the door.
Payment. They take cash and cards. Easy peasy.
Reading your blog makes meso sad we ever moved! Love all of your great Michigan finds!
