Boys’ Book Review: H.I.V.E

I love to read, and I always hoped my boys would love it too. Turns out, they do! My middle son, Parker, is an especially interested reader, plowing through multiple books each week.

Choosing books for boys, when you are a girl, is a tough job. So, Parker has agreed to be a guest blogger a few times each month and recommend great books for boys. His first recommendation is: boys books

H.I.V.E. (Higher Institute for Villainous Education) by Mark Walden

Stats according to Parker:

5 stars

8 books in the series

You will love H.I.V.E if you like: Alex Rider, Artemis Fowl, or Percy Jackson

Language: a little profanity, maybe 10 times in each book (H***, D***)

Nightmares: if you are very sensitive it might scare you, I didn’t find it scary at all

Violence: some violence but nothing gory or graphic

Romance: some romance but nothing at all inappropriate

Themes: good v. evil, overcoming fears, friendship

Reading ability: best for middle school students or above (lexile score: 1040)

H.I.V.E. is about a boy, Otto, and his friends Wing, Shelby, and Lora. They are brought to H.I.V.E (The Higher Institute of Villianous Education) which is a top secret school inside an active volcano where they teach special students how to become villians. Each recruit has his or her own specialty…computers, hacking, combat, or the ability to move without being seen. The teenagers are sent out on missions and are often conflicted…sometimes they are saving the world, other times they are helping their own. While at the school, Otto quickly realizes there is something off with both the school and those who run it. He makes it his personal mission to uncover the mystery of the organization.

H.I.V.E. is great because it is action packed; it has smart writing; it’s futuristic; it’s hard to decide who is good and bad; and you never know what is going to happen next. This book is very hard to put down. I think your son will love it!
