Since my husband and I are both teetotalers, our interest was immediately peaked when someone mentioned a hot dog stand that has been brewing its own ROOTbeer since 1932. We packed the kids in the minivan and drove out Michigan Avenue to Ypsilanti to experience Bill’s Drive In, and we were hooked.

Check the season. Bill’s is only open during the spring, summer and fall, so don’t miss out! The drive-in opens at 10am and closes at 9pm except Sundays when it opens at 11am.
Try a sample. If you aren’t sure you will love the root beer, they will pour you a little sample in a small glass for you to swish around your mouth. The deliciousness will hook you right away and you will order a gallon. Smart marketing.
Buy a gallon…or two. For $3.50 you can purchase a gallon of this home-brewed root beer which is sweet and not too bubbly. Our car was in heaven as we poured a portion into each cup for their sipping pleasure. Of course we took another one home to the fridge.
Try a dog. I must be honest, I don’t eat hot dogs, but I was dying to try their famous chili, so I had chili with onions, mustard and cheese on a hot dog bun for about 95 cents. It could easily become a cheap eat for me. The others who ordered hot dogs were pleased as punch and suggest getting the Michigan sauce. The chili was also a big hit with my kids… kind of sweet with a little kick but not too spicy at all.
Bring cash. This could break the record for your cheapest family dinner out. A hot dog is under $2, the root beer is $3.50 for a gallon and if you just want chili on a bun, it’s less than $1. The low prices are especially nice since it is cash only.
Sit back and relax. Super fast and friendly service here. You can stay in your car and they will bring the goodness to you. Be sure to bring along a little extra to tip your car hop.
Take the kids. Could not be a better kid spot. You can eat in your car or outside. Fast service, kid friendly food…what more could you ask for.
