Are you one of the unlucky ones hanging around over spring break like us? Let me suggest a new indoor fun option, the Saline Rec Center.

While the Saline Rec Center would not be accused of being overly posh, it is a fantastic option for families looking to spend the day actively enjoying their time together. If the weather is nice, there are parks, tennis courts and open fields too. If you go, you will see us there!

Insider Info.

Check out childcare. The Rec Center has a sweet childcare staff that is great with the kids. Children between the ages of 2 months and 9 years have a little place to play while you get some alone time to swim or workout. The cost is extremely reasonable ($4 for the first child, $2 for each additional child or free for members) but the hours are a little different each day, so check the schedule.

Workout first. The Rec Center is equipped with cardio machines, fitness classes and a weight area. Burn a few calories while you read a book or listen to your favorite podcast. It’s always nice to start the day off with a little workout.

Try Zumba. So, shameless plug, but I teach the Zumba class at the Saline Rec Center every Monday and Friday morning at 9:15 and will be teaching over the break. We have such a great time together with my awesome group of ladies, you hardly realize you are working out. I close the blinds and there is no prior dance experience necessary. We are all there to have a good time, so come give it a shot! (Cost per class is $8, or you can sign up for a session).

Play basketball. After your workout, take your kids down to the indoor basketball courts where you can shoot some hoops or play a little indoor soccer. If the courts are not crowded, it’s a great place for kids of all ages to play. There are basketballs available, but they are full size, so if you have little kiddos, you may want to bring your own.

Give kids independence. One thing I love about the Rec Center is that children ages 10 and above can play basketball or swim without adult supervision. While I work out, my oldest loves being able to get a little gym time in, especially if a friend comes along. This facility is a great option for responsible tweens and teens looking for a way to burn some spring break hours.

Pack a lunch. There is an open area with tables where you can get out your lunches or a hearty snack to eat. There are also little kids books and plenty of seating, so it’s a nice way to break up the day. There are vending machines available with snacks and drinks and plenty of water fountains.

Go for a swim. The Rec Center has a great indoor pool that is open most hours the facility is open. The leisure pool has a ramp entry and fairly shallow water to splash and play in. It is warm enough to be comfortable for swimming, some days warmer than others. They have a few balls, but you may want to bring your own water toys if your children enjoy them. They also have a small slide and a deeper end with a basketball hoop for water play, a hot tub for persons over 16 and a lifeguard on duty.

Swim for exercise. There is also a very nice lap pool for those who are interested in exercise swimming. At the end of the lap pool are diving boards which open when there are enough life guards on duty.

Bring extra clothes. After your workout, basketball game, lunch and a swim, it’s nice to end the day with a warm shower and dry clothes before you head back out into the cold!
